AYM – Ayurvedic Yoga Massage

Woman laying on the flor

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage (AYM) is a full body massage that incorporates hands-on and feet-on massage with assisted yoga postures and stretches. Oil is used in combination with an ayurveidc powder. AYM is a type of deep tissue massage where focus is on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. It is important to relax all muscles so it is possible to reach the deeper musculature.

Because I use both oil massage and movement, usually work is done close to my client’s limits, which depend on what the body and mind are ready to receive. So the session can be adapted to suit the specific needs and it can be focused on relaxing, soothing, energizing or remedial experience.

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage Benefits

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage helps to stimulate blood flow whilst also calming the nervous system. Providing the benefits of a thorough deep tissue massage without the requirement of excessive pressure. On a conscious level it helps to sense the signals our body send us. I talk more about body awareness in my blog.

Plausible medical effects do not end there. The emotional value of touch and the effects on mood and mental health are so profound that patients really just cannot lose — good quality massage therapy is a worthwhile service for anyone who can afford it whether it “works” for anything in a medical sense or not.

Practice of deep yoga breathing

We all know how important breathing is. During the session, powerful bodywork is taking place and the breathing is that element which provides cohesion and amplifies all the previously mentioned benefits. Throughout the treatment I will be coaching you to maintain a steady rhythmic flow, preferably in and out through the nose. When necessary, I will ask you to exhale through the mouth as this helps to assist release into some of the deeper stretches.

Stretches are executed on the exhalation when deeper release is available, and the repetition of each stretch three to five times, or more, allows a progressively deeper movement from the muscles, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels right down to the skeletal system. Stress trapped in the muscles and tendons is safely released; stiff joints are relieved and the entire system is profoundly re-oxygenated at the deepest level.

About the session and what to expect

The duration will strictly depends on client’s needs and how much body and mind can take on that particular day. Tiredness, stress, general wellbeing or any health limitations always are a key factors, so the session can last usually from one hour to 90 minutes. AYM is a floor massage and requires the client to participate through conscious breath work. Covering is provided and used respectfully by the practitioner as the massage progresses from the back to the legs, finishing with a stress relieving shoulder and head massage.
