What to Expect
We meet at the Strandhill Surf Experience Surf Van and get Surf-ready into our wetsuits. Leaving behind the village we head down to the beach and form our Beach Yoga Circle. Releasing tensions, building energy and getting powered up for time on on the water. No Yoga mats required for this, the sand is our studio floor.
How does yoga enhance the surf experience?
When you start your surf session with beach yoga it provides the opportunity for three things to happen.
Physically the yoga practice brings mobility into your body by releasing tension from muscles. It also safely activates muscle groups so that there is greater internal connection throughout the body, this translates into agility on the water.
Mentally the mindful breathwork brings your nervous system out of sympathetic mode, typically referred to as ‘fight or flight’, and into parasympathetic mode often referred to as ‘rest and digest’. When you’re feeling nervousness, maybe a first time surfer or a previous experience has knocked your confidence, then you will typically be in sympathetic mode. If you’re lucky it may just feel like giddiness but it will also make it hard to concentrate and to take instruction. In worst case scenario excessive sympathetic nervousness may make you want to quit or run away. Calming the nervous system into parasympathetic mode allows you to feel at ease in yourself and able to understand and follow instruction.
Emotionally, there are many benefits to pausing and taking time on the beach before getting into the water. You will see most long-time surfers watching, listening and observing the ocean before getting in. Breathing deep and finding presence in yourself enhances every surfers experience whether a first timer or an old pro
No Yoga Mat required, all Surf equipment provided on the day.
